On the 4th of June, the All Island Social Security Network (AISSN) collaborated with the Centre for Cross Border Cooperation (CBBC) to hold a webinar which examined the social security implications for cross-border workers.
Anne Devlin (ERSI & AISSN) introduced the Network and thanked CBBC for hosting the webinar. Annmarie O’Kane (CBBC) then presented the key issues that emerged from the all-island labour market study with regards to social security implications for cross-border workers. Social security advisors, mainly in border areas, then discussed some of the issues they are seeing within their own work. Issues were raised with regards to a wide range of different social security measures and many of the cases discussed or examples given were incredibly complex. Legal experts in the space also discussed some of the relevant case law which has emerged recently or is currently moving through the judicial system. It was clear that there are significant issues both for residents in NI and RoI, some of which are having significant financial implications for individuals and normally aren’t discovered until it is too late.
This was part of a series of webinars which CBBC has held in the past few months based upon the significant all-island labour market study by Maureen O’Reilly (independent economist), Annmarie O’Kane (CBBC), Rose Tierney (cross-border specialist on tax and accountant) and Anne Devlin (ERSI & AISSN). The study itself examines the current operation of the all-island labour market and the associated issues and opportunities which arise from cross-border working.
